Mahonia bealei (Leatherleaf mahonia)

Mahonia bealei is a drought tolerant evergreen shrub which is good with contemporary designs.  Also good in wooded areas.  Color will bleach out if grown in full sun.  Flowers attract bees and fruit attracts birds. This plant is mildly resistant to damage by deer.  This plant grows to a height of 4 to 8 feet with bright yellow flowers in winter and bright blue fruit in summer.  Foliage:  Alternate, compound pinnate, leathery dark green to blue-green leaves;  1-2 feet long; 9-13 leaflets with 5-7 spines on each.

• Informal multi-stemmed shrub; irregular, strong upright stems with limited branching
• Flowers:  3-6 in. raceme of bright yellow flowers in winter; fragrant
• Fruit:  bright blue fruit in summer
• Prefers partial shade
• Moist, well-drained acidic soil, but tolerates heavy clay
• Avoid harsh winds; good in wooded setting
• Deer resistant
• Zones 7-9
