Glossy Abelia

Glossy Abelia is an evergreen or semi-evergreen sprawling shrub with arching stems and fine-textured foliage that reaches 6 feet tall and wide.  The yellow-green foliage develops a nice gold or bronze color that tends to stand out among other plants in the landscape.  Clusters of small tubular flowers are attractive to butterflies.

  • Foliage:  Yellow/green, glossy
  • Flower:  White (tinged pink)
  • Blooms spring-fall
  • Attracts Butterflies
  • 3-4′ with moderate growth rate
  • Use as container, shrub border, hedge, foundation plant or specimen
  • Full sun; partial shade
  • Water needs:  Moderate
  • Soil tolerances:  Prefers moist, well-drained soils; moderately drought tolerant
  • Zones 6-9
  • Easy/low maintenance

This plant is low maintenance once established.  Abelia benefits from springtime pruning, but can be pruned as needed any time since flowers are borne on current season’s growth.  Thinning will help stimulate branching and create fuller plant by allowing more light to reach interior foliage.  Slow-release fertilizer may be beneficial for increased growth and flowering.  Plant in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter and maintain 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch.  Glossy Abelia performs best in sunny locations, becoming thin and unattractive in the shade where it may also have trouble flowering.

Occasional outbreak of aphids may occur, but overall no pests or diseases are of major concern.

Edward Goucher

Edward Goucher Abelia is a beautiful semi-evergreen shrub with pink flowers that is related to,but not a true glossy abelia.  It has gracefully arching branches, small lilac pink flowers and leaves turn bronzy in the fall.  Pink Abelia or Edward Goucher Abelia is a great shrub for border planting, informal hedge or as a divider.  It is less hardy than glossy abelia and best used in zones 6b or higher.

Rose Creek Abelia

Rose Creek Abelia is a medium to large evergreen shrub with lustrous foliage and relatively showy flowers from late spring to first frost.  This shrub transforms to a wonderful combination of purple and green in winter.  Abelia is quite heat and drought tolerant and this species makes an excellent foundation, container or low hedge plant.  No special care is needed, but can benefit from a hard pruning to rejuvenate the plant.  Due to its flowering season, this plant is continually visited by bees and butterflies throughout late spring/summer.  Persons allergic to bee stings may not want to place this plant close to entryway, play area or walkway.

  • Foliage:  Yellow/green, glossy
  • Flower:  White/pink
  • Blooms spring

  • 3-4′ with moderate growth rate
  • Use as container, shrub border, hedge, foundation plant or specimen
