Arborvitae
American Arborvitae
The American Arborvitae is an evergreen plant that grows up to 70′ tall in a columnar shape. Spme cultivars grow to smaller heights. Leaves are dark green juniper-like foliage that is coarser than Platycladus orientalis ‘Bakeri’ and smells like mint medicine when crushed. Does not form vertical lines. This plant is native to northern United States, so it is very cold hardy. Coltivar ‘Woodwardii Globe’ grows 3′ tall and 3′ wide in a globe shape. Gets brown in whter. Cultivar ‘Tom Thumb’ grows the same as ‘Woodward Globe’, but stays green year round. The globe arborvitae can be controlled down to 3′.

The slow growing emerald arborvitae is great for specimen or accent planting, hedges, privacy screens and shelterbelts. It also makes a good foundation plant.
- Evergreen, keeping foliage all year round
- Grows to height of 10-15′ and spread of 3-4′ at maturity
- Slow growing with a height increase of less than 12″ per year
- Full sun and partial shade, prefers a minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight each day
- Grows in a pyramidal shape, does not discolor in winter
- Releases a pleasing aroma when leaves are squeezed
- Features tiny scale-like lustrous foliage that displays as a flattened fan-like vertical spray
- Soil preferences – grows well in acidic, loamy, rich, sandy, silty loan and well-drained soils
- Tolerates heat and drought once established and is cold-hardy to -40 degrees F
- Works well as a specimen or accent for hedges and privacy screens, for shelterbests and as a foundation plant
- Plant 2-3′ apart for a screen
- Zones 3-7

Green Giant Arborvitae

This is an exceptional landscape tree for use as a screen, hedge or single specimen. It is also resistant to wind once established and can withstand heavy ice or snow, making it a good choice for a natural windbreak.
