Boxwoods are characterized by the following: opposite leaves, small leaves less than 1″ long, square young twigs and fibrous root system which makes for easy transplanting. Boxwoods are find textured plants that lend themselves to many foundation plantings and formal gardens. Boxwoods grow 3′ to 10′ tall, depending upon variation, and can be kept to 3′ tall with pruning. Boxwoods contain a toxic alkaloid that makes then unpalatable; therefore, deer and other wildlife tend not to eat them.

Green Velvet Boxwood

This boxwood hybrid combines the best characteristics of two other boxwoods – the hardiness and compactness of the Korean boxwood as well as the velvety deep green foliage of the English boxwood.  It adapts to a wide range of soil conditions and keeps its color year-round, making it an appealing landscape plant.

  • Evergreen shrub, keeps its foliage year round
  • Grows to height of 2-4′ and spread of 2-4′ at maturity
  • Slow growth rate with height increase of less than 12″ per year
  • Full sun and partial shade are best for this shrub, prefers minimum of 4 hours of direct sunlight daily
  • Adapts to wide range of soils and is intolerant of wet soil
  • Can easily be sheared into any form, but grows in a round shape
  • Produces clusters of pale green to cream flowers that are fragrant, but inconspicuous
  • Does not tolerate salt
  • Needs protection from winter, sun, strong winds and heavy snow
  • Zones 4-9

Wintergreen Boxwood

The common name for Wintergreen boxwood is Korean boxwood and is best grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil in full to part shade.  This shrub is tolerant of pruning and shearing, but avoid cultivating around plants because they have shallow roots.  Matures to 2-3′ tall and wide.

  • Evergreen shrub, keeps foliage year round
  • Grows to height of 2-3′  and spread of 2-3′ at maturity
  • Full sun and partial shade
  • Blooms in April
  • Low Maintenance
  • Best grown in medium moisture, well-drained soil
  • Tolerant of pruning/shearing, but beware of shallow roots
  • Generally noted for having best winter hardiness
  • No serious insect or disease problems (three main insect pests of boxwoods are boxwood leaf miner, boxwood mite and psyllids)
  • Root rot can be problem in poorly drained soils
  • Zones 5-9
