Blue Pacific Shore Juniper (Juniperus conferta ‘Blue Pacific’)

Blue Pacific Shore Juniper is a dwarf form that grows to 6 feet tall and from 3 to 5 feet wide.  It will root as it spreads.  Leaves grow less than 1/2 inch long and have a blue tint.  All juvenile foliage.  Has a white line underneath the leaves.  Blue Pacific needs full sun with at least 6 hours per day and is drought tolerant and cold hardy to New England.  It is slow growing.  Because the branches will root down, this plan can be used to stabilize banks.  Salt spray tolerant.  Have seen used extensively on Jekyll Island, Georgia.

Bar Harbor Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Bar Harbor’)

Bar Harbor Juniper grows up to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet weide.  All adult foliate has a purplish color, especially, in winter.  Similar to Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltonii’, but not as prostrate to the ground.  This plant is cold hardy from Canada to Florida and is drought tolerant.  Likes full sun and is slow growing.

Andorra Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Plumosa’)

Andorra Juniper is vase shaped and fast growing up to 2 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide.  All juvenile foliage (sticky).  Foliage is purple in the fall and winter, but light green in the summer.  There is also a dwarf form (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Plumosa Compacta’).  Makes a good bank cover.

Blue Rug Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Wiltonii’)

Blue Rug Juniper grows only up to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide.  All adult foliage (not sticky) with a blue tint.  This plant is very cold hardy (Canada to Florida) and drought tolerant.  Needs full sun and is slow growing.  Very popular juniper for a groundcover.

Blue Vase Juniper (Juniperus x media ‘Blue Vase’)

Blue Vase Juniper grows 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 feet wide and has a tighter growth habit than Juniperus chinensis ‘Hetzii’ with no long branches sticking out.  Grows in a vase shap and can be controlled at about 5 feet tall.  Mostly adult foliage with juvenile foliage very uncommon and has a blue tint.  Foliage is soft to the touch.  This plant must have full sun and is drought tolerant.  Hardy to zone 3.  Is tight growing with a blue cast.  A member of the Cupressaceae family.

Pfitzer Juniper (Juniperus x media ‘Pfitzeriana’ – Juniperus chinensis ‘Pfitzeriana’)

Pfitzer Juniper grows 3 to 5 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide.  Mostly dark green adult foliage with some juvenile foliage present.  This is a large shrub.  Keep out of small areas.  Drought and cold tolerant.  Needs full sun.

Dwarf Pfitzer (Juniperus x media ‘Pfitzeriana Compacta’)

Dwarf Pfitzer grows 3 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide.  Mostly adult but some juvenile foliage.  This plant is a dwarf form of Juniperus x media “Pfitzeriana’ and a good shrub for small areas.

Grey Owl (Juniperus virginiana)

Grey Owl is low maintenance and easily grown in average, medium well-drained soil in full sun.  Tolerant of a wide variety of soils.  Also tolerant of wind and of many city air pollutants.  This eastern red cedar cultivar is a broad, slow-growing evergreen shrub with a compact wide-spreading habit which typically grows up to 3 feet tall (infrequently larger) and to 6 feet wide.  Features scale-like silver gray foliage.  A female form which produces profuse glaucous berry-like cones which are attractive to birds.  This plant may be a hybrid, but is usually listed for sale as a cultivar of Juniperus virginiana.  This plant is susceptible to bagworms and cedar apple rust.  Resists Phomopsis twig blight.  Garden uses include specimen, shrub bordar or hedge, mass for windbreaks or screens.

Parson’s Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis ‘Parsonii’)

Parson’s Chinese Juniper is lush, beautiful and tough as nails.  Juniper ‘Parsonii’ is an ideal problem-solver for many difficult sites.  It is derived from Chinese juniper (juniperus chinensis), a highly variable species found throughout China and Japan.  Juniper’s diversity of form has led to the creation of numerous cultivars of different shapes, sizes and color variations.  Parson’s juniper forms a low wide-spreading mound of scaled, evergreen blue-tinted foliage which is reported to hold its color well through the cold temperatures of winter.  Small blue berry-like fruits appear on female plants and are enjoyed by many birds.  Junipers are low-maintenance shrubs which prefer full sun and are not picky about soil fertility.  Good drainage is essential as they cannot tolerate saturated ground.  The wide-spreading form and attractive cool-toned foliage of ‘Parsonii’ makes it a perfect groundcover choice for dry difficult areas such as hillsides or unirrigated foundation beds.
