Description
Crawford Nursery has many varieties of Cypress trees:
Arizona Cypress (Cupressus arizonica)
Arizona Cypress is a great screening evergreen tree. This tree is a conical, broadly pyramidal growing conifer that will grow about 1-2′ per year and reach a mature height of 30-40′ and width of 15-20′. It has a reddish brown bark, susceptible to canker, foliage thins if grown in shade, can be used as a specimen tree or great for windbreaks. If creating a screen, you will want to plant at least 7 ‘ apart. It does best in full to partial sun and has beautiful silvery blue/teal coloration year round. The branches are sturdy, but have a lacy appearance. Its aroma and color interest makes a great display in holiday greenery. It is rather drought tolerant, has low water requirement once established and can withstand the heat of summer. It is relatively trouble-free and moderately deer resistant, making it s good choice for screening, compared to other fast growing evergreen choices.

Golden Hinoke Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Crippsii’)
Golden Hinoke Cypress is considered a broad, upright pyramidal shrub with spreading loose and open branches green within the plant, sprays of feathery, bright golden-yellow foliage. This evergreen shrub is grown for foliage and prefers sun to light shade and moist well-drained soil.
- Grows 8-10 ft tall and 3-4 ft wide
- Good winter color
- Sun to light shade
- moist well-drained soil
- Zones 4-8
Golden Mop
Golden Mop is a mounded, slow-growing dwarf shrub that typically grows to 2-3′ tall and as wide over the first 10 years, eventually maturing to as much as 5′ tall. This is a filifera-type plant with stringly whip-like golden yellow foliage. It retains good yellow color throughout the year. Golden Mop easily grows in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Best golden foliage color usually appears in full sun. Prefers moist, fertile soils. Avoid wet, poorly drained soils. Shelter from strong winds. Pruning is rarely needed.
- Bloom: Non-flowering
- Fun sun to part shade
- Moisture: Medium
- Drought Tolerant
- No serious insect or disease problem – some susceptibility to juniper blight, root rot and certain insect pests such as bagworms
- Uses: Rock gardens, foundation planting, slopes, edging, border fronts, container, Bonsai
- Zone 7-9
Italian Cypress
Leighton Green
Leighton Green Cypress tree is tall and columnar with dense branching and dark green foliage.
Haggerston Gray
Haggerston Gray Cypress tree has irregular lateral branches with sage green foliage.
Leyland Cypress
Leyland Cypress is a large, handsome evergreen that is extensively used in the Southeast. It is a favorite because it is fast growing. This tree will grow to 60-70′ tall and 12-20′ wide. Heights of 70-100′ are not uncommon. It grows rapidly (3-4 ft per year when young).
The Leyland Cypress forms a graceful pyramid, with dense pendulous branches and fine, feathery foliage. This foliage on flattened branchlets is dark green or blue and is small and scale-like. The fruit (cone) is small and brown, and creates no litter problem.
This fast growing evergreen will quickly outgrow its space in small landscapes. It is an excellent choice for quick screens, hedges and groupings, especially on large properties. This tree tolerates severe trimming and can be restrained at an early age with pruning. Although Leyland can be sheared into a tall screen on small lots, it is most effective when allowed to develop into its natural shape. Regular trimming is necessary to retain a formal hedge, screen or windbreak. When considering this tree for use in a design, be mindful of its projected height as it usually grows larger than most people desire. It is a good background plant and contrasts well with broadleaf evergreens.
- Grows 60-70′ tall and 12-20′ wide
- Rapid growing (3-4′ per year)
- Prefers sun to part shade
- Soil: Well drained, fertile soil
- Withstands salt spray and suitable for costal landscapes
- Prune only through dry season to prevent disease
- The most serious problem is canker which can cause dieback to main truck and kill tree
Naylor’s Blue
Naylor’s Blue Cypress – this columnar form is more loosely branched and open than most. The foliage is blue-gray. It may be slower growing.
Silver Dust
Silver dust Cypress is a wide-spreading form which has blue-green foliage market with variegation.
