Picea glauca ‘Conica’ – Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Pinaceae)

Piea glauca ‘Conica’ is a common small to medium pyramidal evergreen shrub.  Dwarf Alberta Spruce serves as a formal foundation shrub.  This is an excellent formal specimen shrub, slow growth allows it to be a low-maintenance foundation shrub.  Uses for this evergreen include specimen, foundation or focal point shrub.

• Grows to 10′ tall x 8′ wide
• Upright pyramidal growth habit
• Very slow growth rate
• Foliage:  light green, very thin needles
• Flowers:  inconspicuous; monoecious
• Fruit:  few (if any) small cones
• Twigs:  light brown
• Trunk:  thin gray scales with age; hidden
• Full to partial sun
• Prefers moist well-drained soil
• Not tolerant to urban stresses (pollution, winter salt spray, continuously dry soils, high light reflection and heat)
• A few serious pests (and possibly also disease)
• Zones 2

Dwarf Alberta Spruce should only be used with discretion in areas with good air circulation and possibly an annual pesticide prevention application program.
