Euonymus

Description

Euonymus evergreen plant can be characterized by opposite leaves, crenated leaf margin, thick waxy leaf and new growth with green stems.  Euonymus scale is a major problem on the cultivars of this species so caution should be exercised in their use.  

Purple Creeper

The growth habit is a ground cover that grows up to 18″ tall and runs.  Leaves are opposite with white veins on the top of the leaf.  The underside of the leaf turns purple in winter.  Up to 3″ in length.  Some stems will stick up and can climb up walls.  Very hard to get a thick cover.  Not a very good looking plant.  Has loose and coarse texture.  Does not get euonymus scale very bad.  Hardy to zone 4.

Evergreen Euonymus

Evergreen Euonymus (Euonymus japonicus) grows from 5′ to 10′ tall and wide.  Leaves are opposite and up to 3″ long with serrations starting 1/4 of the way up the leaf.  Peiole and leaf turn up.  Has indistinct venation.  Thick and waxy with crenate margin.  Young twigs are green.  Is drought tolerant and needs full sun or part shade.  Can get euonymus scale (an insect that sucks the juice out.  Hardy from zone 7 to 9.
